At approximately 10.21pm on Christmas Eve 1953, the Wellington to Auckland Express plunged into the Whangaehu River at Tangiwai (Maori for Weeping Waters) killing 151 men, women and children.

151 people perished in the disaster and for a country of only just over 2 millions inhabitants it was a blow for the people of New Zealand, nearly everyone knew someone who was directly effected by the disaster.
