Learn more about satellites, space junk, and other objects floating in orbits. It then shares its information with the SSN. Orbital debris, or “space junk,” is any man-made object in orbit around the Earth that no longer serves a useful purpose. It has 150 telescopes around the world that are tracking space junk. No matter which technology proves itself, space junk isn’t going away. Space junk can be bad news for an orbiting satellite. On February 11, 2009, a U.S. communications satellite owned by a private company called Iridium collided with a non-functioning Russian satellite. This test successfully exploded the dead satellite, and created over two thousand new pieces of space debris, which, at the time, increased our space junk tally by 25%. The Department of Defense’s Space Surveillance Network (SSN) watches nearly 15,000 objects two inches or greater in size that are in a low orbit around the earth. When you look up at the stars, you won’t see the hundreds of thousands of pieces of space junk and debris circling the planet, but it’s out there! But large quantities of space junk end up staying in various orbits around Earth, threatening satellites, the International Space Station (ISS), as well as future missions beyond Earth's vicinity – to asteroids, the Moon and Mars. 2 Minute Read The skies above Earth are teeming with more than 8,000 manmade objects, large and small.
