The mysterious Tunguska event — as it came to be known — was later characterized as an exploding meteor, or bolide, up to 30 megatons, at an estimated altitude of 10 to 15 kilometres (6.2 to 9.3 miles), Science Alert reported. ‘Tunguska’ Size Asteroid Buzzes Earth. An asteroid similar in size to one that exploded more than 100 years ago in Russia's Tunguska region in Siberia gave Earth a close shave on Sunday (April 15), just one day after astronomers discovered the object. The asteroid, known as 2018 GE3, zoomed past our fragile planet on Sunday April 15 around 2:41 a.m. EDT (0641 GMT), missing us by a distance of just 192,000 kilometers (119,400 miles). The researchers estimated that the Tunguska meteor likely measured between 328 and 656 feet (100 and 200 m) in diameter, and hurtled through Earth's atmosphere at … Meteorite Incidents (Tunguska and Chelyabinsk) Tunguska Event. That’s only half the distance between the Earth and the Moon. The simulations show that the object could have been a 50—60 m diameter stony asteroid, or an 80—100 m comet: either would produce similar effects at the Tunguska site. Now known as the Tunguska event, its cause remains a mystery to this day. A 70 m comet falling vertically could reach the ground, whereas one up to 1 km across, coming in at 5° to the horizontal, would unload nearly all its kinetic energy into the atmosphere. Was the atomic bomb–size airburst caused by antimatter?
