Our faculty, research staff, and students develop technology & instrumentation with a focus on an engineering and technical core. Research.

The TESS Science Conference I will be the first conference dedicated to TESS mission science, including exoplanets, asteroseismology, stellar binaries, variable stars, Solar System science (e.g., asteroids and comets), extragalactic astronomy (e.g., active galactic nuclei and supernovae), and any other science that can be done with TESS data. We are comprised of the MIT Department of Physics, MIT School of Engineering, & MIT EAPS (Earth, Atmospheric & Planetary Sciences). Astronomers predict that TESS will discover dozens of Earth-sized planets and up to 500 planets less than twice the size of Earth. TESS will find upwards of 17,000 planets larger than Neptune. In addition to Earth-sized planets, TESS is expected to find some 20,000 exoplanets in its two-year prime mission. Overview. Stay . TESS is scheduled to launch April 16, 2018, atop a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. Dr. George Ricker is the TESS Principal Investigator currently Director of the CCD Laboratory in the MIT Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research The satellite is the next step in NASA’s search for planets outside our solar system, known as exoplanets.

Characterising the atmospheres of small planets is a key step in determining the potential habitability of extrasolar worlds that orbit distant stars.
The MIT Kavli Institute paves the way for new developments in space- & ground-based astrophysics. The principal goal of the TESS mission is to detect small planets with bright host stars in the solar neighborhood, so that detailed characterizations of the planets and their atmospheres can be performed. Cette mission propose de scruter le ciel grâce à 4 caméras grand angle (24° x 24°), diamètre champ oculaire 100 mm, résolution 16,8 Mpixels fabriquées par le MIT.
