It was included in the Salyut program to disguise its true military nature. Salyut 3 (Russian: Салют-3; English: Salute 3; also known as OPS-2 or Almaz 2) was a Soviet space station launched on 25 June 1974. Initial hopes to commercialize the Almaz space station during the 1990s, relied on its capabilities to take photographic and radar imagery of the Earth surface. It was the second Almaz military space station, and the first such station to be launched successfully.
A US-based marketing office, which would offer on-demand imagery to commercial clients, had been set up, however the project had never taken off.
