A partition coefficient is the ratio of the concentration of a substance in one medium or phase (C 1) to the concentration in a second phase (C 2) when the two concentrations are at equilibrium; that is, partition coefficient = (C 1 / C 2) equil. A summand in a partition is also called a part. In physical chemistry, Henry's law is a gas law that states that the amount of dissolved gas in a liquid is proportional to its partial pressure above the liquid. Since adsorption occurs predominantly by partition into the soil organic matter, it is more useful to normalize the Kd or Kf to the organic carbon content of a soil and express the distribution coefficient in Koc or Kfoc. The units of C 1 and C 2 may be different. In chemistry, the mass fraction of a substance within a mixture is the ratio (alternatively denoted ) of the mass of that substance to the total mass of the mixture. The proportionality factor is called Henry's law constant. Other articles where Partition coefficient is discussed: cell: Permeation: …unit of measure called the partition coefficient. The greater the solubility of a substance, the higher its partition coefficient, and the higher the partition coefficient, the higher the permeability of the membrane to that particular substance.

These coefficients are a measure of the difference in solubility of the compound in these two phases. K ow is also frequently referred to by the symbol P, especially in the English literature. A partition coefficient is simply the ratio of the concentration of anesthetic in one phase or solvent compared to another. Partition coefficient In the physical sciences, a partition- or distribution-coefficient is the ratio of concentrations of a compound in a mixture of two immiscible phases at equilibrium. The coefficients of most clinical relevance are the blood:gas and oil:gas partition coefficients. The n -octanol-water partition coefficient, K ow is a partition coefficient for the two-phase system consisting of n -Octanol and Water. The number of partitions of n is given by the partition function p (n). So p (4) = 5. The blood:gas partition coefficient is an important determinant of the speed of anesthetic induction and recovery. Koc is known as organic carbon-water partition co-efficient. The notation λ ⊢ n means that λ is a partition of n.
