Mars: Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) Mars Orbiter Camera (MOC) 601x902x1: PIA04891: Elysium Mons Wind Streak Full Resolution: TIFF (542.9 kB) JPEG (66.77 kB) 2003-12-03: Mars: Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) Mars Orbiter Camera (MOC) 768x1152x1 As seen from Mars by the NASA Mars Global Surveyor on May 8, 2003, at 13:00 GMT (6:00 a.m. PDT), Earth and the Moon appeared in the evening sky. This map is actually more directly comparable to the drawings made by Earth-based astronomers, because it focuses on albedo variations (differences in brightness and darkness from …
The Thermal Emission Spectrometer on Mars Global Surveyor mapped Mars at longer wavelengths, and with a different purpose, than the earlier photographic atlases composed by the Viking Orbiters and Mariner 9. The long duration of its mission allowed it to observe ongoing surface processes. The Northern Lowlands consists of the Vastitas Borealis, with three Mars Global Surveyor studied Mars from 1997 to 2006. Mars Polar Lander - NASA attempted lander to Mars (1999) Deep Space 2 - NASA attempted penetrator mission to Mars (1999) Mars Climate Orbiter - NASA attempted orbiter to Mars (1998) Nozomi (Planet-B) - ISAS (Japan) orbiter to Mars (1998) Mars Global Surveyor - NASA Mars orbiter (1996) Mars Pathfinder - NASA lander and rover to Mars (1996) Its Mars Orbiter Camera (MOC) provided both high-resolution images and a long-term record of lower-resolution global views. There are three clearly visible impact basins: Argyre and Hellas in the south, and Isidis near the equator.
The base map is a Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter topographic map of Mars.
The most obvious geomorphic feature of Mars is the dichotomy between its northern lowlands and southern highlands.
The Mars Global Surveyor orbiter, which operated on Mars for more than nine years, was designed to study the composition of Mars, map its topography and monitor weather patterns. The orbiter made a number of discoveries about the Red Planet, including evidence of liquid water at or near the Martian surface. The Mars Global Surveyor orbiter, which operated on Mars for more than nine years, was designed to study the composition of Mars, map its topography and monitor weather patterns. This Earth/Moon image has been specially processed to allow both Earth (with an apparent magnitude of -2.5) and the much darker Moon (with an apparent magnitude of +0.9) to be visible together. Mars Global Surveyor Launch Date: November 7, 1996
