XMM-Newton's operational orbit was chosen for two reasons: First, the XMM-Newton instruments need to work outside the radiation belts surrounding the Earth.

Second, a highly eccentric orbit offers the longest possible observation periods - less interrupted by the frequent passages in the Earth's shadow that occur in LEO (Low Earth Orbit). My name is Fraser Cain; I’m the publisher of Universe Today, and with me is Dr. Pamela Gay, a professor at Southern Illinois University – Edwardsville.

Transcript: XMM-Newton. Download the transcript. All modern x86-64 OSes save/restore the x87 state (and thus the MMX state). In a survey of distant clusters of galaxies, XMM-Newton has found puzzling differences between today's clusters of galaxies and those present in the Universe around seven thousand million years ago. Fraser: Welcome to Astronomy Cast our weekly facts-based journey through the Cosmos, where we help you understand not only what we know, but how we know what we know. GENERAL SCIENCE OBJECTIVES XMM-Newton is designed specifically to investigate in detail the X-ray emission characteristics, i.e. The spacecraft viewed three regions of the sky: part of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), the Hickson Cluster Group 16 (HCG-16), and the star HR 1099. Some scientists claim that this can be interpreted to mean that the 'dark energy' which most astronomers now believe dominates the Universe simply does not exist. …

And because the ambient pressure is low (a) the temperatures required to do this are not very high and (b) the contaminants can be sublimed off directly. Paris, 12 Dec 2003 ESA's X-ray observatory, XMM-Newton, has returned tantalising new data about the nature of the Universe. Microsoft has said some stuff about MMX being deprecated / discourages for x86-64, but even they are clear that it does actually work at least at the asm level, whether or not their compiler intrinsics still work.

Fortunately there is a very simple remedy; if the temperature can be raised to a suitable level the contaminants can be driven off.
