On May 2, 1999, he was shot down.

It was hit with a missile on March 27, 1999.
"It was a full-moon night.

The pilot, Lt. Col. Dale Zelko, also survived and later befriended the man who shot his aircraft down, according to the BBC. Goldfein said the same Serb who shot down Lt. Col. Dale Zelko’s F-117A Nighthawk the fourth night of the campaign also shot him down, with the same skillfully jury-rigged SAM battery. The bravery of a small group of airmen saved the life of Gen. Goldfein, who, 17 years later, would be nominated to lead the Air Force.

You don't want to be highlighted (in the sky) too long." This is that story.
