Tremorlike seismic signals were found to correlate temporally and spatially with slip events identified from crustal motion data spanning the past 6 years. These slow slip events, or silent earthquakes, have been detected by GPS networks in Cascadia, southwest Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, and Alaska. Slow slip and associated tremor are common to many subduction zones, and occur down-dip from the neighbouring locked zone where megaquakes take place. Slow slip events can be detected in GPS time series which record the anomalous surface displacements caused by slip on the fault at depth.
