The Soil Water Index quantifies the moisture condition at various depths in the soil. the profile soil moisture from the remotely-sensed surface states. Soil moisture data sets derived from novel earth observation missions (SMAP) are foreseen. Nonetheless, for ASCAT we have always stressed that the information content lies in the relative variation of the observations A Review of the Applications of ASCAT Soil Moisture Products Abstract: Remote sensing of soil moisture has reached a level of good maturity and accuracy for which the retrieved products are ready to use in real-world applications. ASAR 1km Surface Soil Moisture This data viewer shows monthly composites of 1 km surface soil moisture data derived from the ENVISAT Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ASAR) Global Monitoring (GM) mode. Working Hypothesis for ASCAT Soil Moisture Retrieval Information about absolute soil moisture content comes from soil maps, not the satellite ASCAT data are not fundamentally different to SMOS or SMAP. Soil moisture is a very heterogeneous variable and varies on small scales with soil properties and drainage patterns. ASCAT Soil Moisture: An Assessment of the Data Quality and Consistency with the ERS Scatterometer Heritage V ... surface soil moisture due to the large difference in di-electric constant between dry and wet soil. ASCAT uses radar to measure the electromagnetic backscatter from the wind-roughened ocean surface. Nonetheless, the ASCAT soil moisture product is relatively complex, requiring a good understanding of its properties before it can be successfully used in applications. Soil Moisture Data Sets: Overview & Comparison Tables Soil moisture is a state variable of the land that crosses the interfaces of several disciplines, including meteorology, hydrology, climatology and ecology. It is mainly driven by the precipitation via the process of infiltration. In hydrological monitoring and forecast applications, an estimate of the root-zone soil moisture is often required, and the exponential filter constitutes a common approach to obtaining a soil water index (SWI), i.e.

Data from ASCAT is also being applied in a number of other areas such as the monitoring of land-ice, sea-ice, snow cover and soil moisture. Satellite measurements integrate over relative large-scale areas, with the presence of vegetation adding complexity to the interpretation.
