The Christmas Markets in Switzerland may not be as famous as those in Germany, but they are just as magical. More than 180 stalls add to the festive charm and they are watched over by a huge Christmas tree decorated by Johann Wanner, a Basel local who, for more than 50 years has created beautiful hand-blown and hand-painted Christmas decorations.

My favourite are the Einsiedeln Christmas Market and Zürich's Weihnachtsdorf. Switzerland comes alive during the winter season, particularly in the weeks running up to Christmas.
A Christmas holiday celebration in Switzerland also includes a yearly tradition in which hundreds of floating candles (800 to be exact,) are released into the River Limmat. This is an extremely popular event that locals and tourists attend every year, so it helps to get there as early as you can.
