NASA has celebrated the selection of its astronauts, but there’s never been much of a public celebration for their graduation from astronaut training. NASA astronaut Terry Virts (selected in 2000) took this spectacular spacewalk in 2015. If you've always wanted to fly to the International Space Station or go on to the moon, NASA's next recruitment effort promises to bring future astronauts to both locations. The selection process is made up of four rounds. The astronauts must be intelligent, creative, psychologically stable and physically healthy. Until recently, astronauts were sponsored and trained exclusively by governments, either by the military or by civilian space agencies. This round will trim down the remaining 100 candidates to 40 through a series of group challenges. Next, the remaining candidates get reviewed by the 50-person Astronaut Rating Panel, most of whom are current astronauts.

A record-breaking 18,300 people have applied to be in NASA's 2017 astronaut class. The combined skill set of each astronaut team member must cover a very wide range of disciplines. Until today.
Mars One released new information about the third round in the Astronaut Selection Program.
During the initial round all candidates must submit an online application that consists of general information about the applicant, a motivation letter, a resume and a one minute video that answers provided questions and explains their reasoning. This is a list of astronauts by year of selection: people selected to train for a human spaceflight program to command, pilot, or serve as a crew member of a spacecraft.
