Luna 1 had missed its target by about 3,700 miles after it launched in January of the same year. It was launched by the Soviet Union January 31, 1966, and returned photographs of the lunar surface for three days. Luna 2, like Luna 1, took a direct path to the Moon with a journey time of around 36 hours.

This was dictated by the fact that the Earth-Moon gravitational system forced it to follow a curved trajectory, and launch had to occur from the side of the Earth opposite the Moon. The first stage of the rocket failed after 87 seconds, due to combustion instability, and a second attempt on October 12th ended in the same way after 104 seconds. Luna 9 Luna 9, the first spacecraft to soft-land on the Moon. Luna, any of a series of 24 unmanned Soviet lunar probes launched between 1959 and 1976. After midnight passed in Moscow, the Soviet Union’s Luna 2 intentionally crashed into the moon on September 14, 1959, becoming the first man-made spacecraft to reach the moon. It was actually the Soviet Union’s second attempt to reach the moon. Luna 2 was similar in design to Luna 1, a spherical spacecraft with protruding antennae and instrument parts. Luna E-1 No.1, sometimes identified by NASA as Luna 1958A, was a Soviet Luna E-1 spacecraft which was intended to impact the Moon.It did not accomplish this objective as it was lost in a launch failure. The spacecraft’s magnetometer measured no significant lunar magnetic field as close as 55 kilometers to the lunar surface. Luna Rocket Launch After less than a year of rapid development, the first launch was attempted on September 23rd, 1958. The first spacecraft to land on the Moon, it impacted the lunar surface east of Mare Serenitatis near the Aristides, Archimedes, and Autolycus craters. The radiation detectors also found no hint of a … Luna E-1 No.1 was a 361-kilogram (796 lb) spacecraft which marked the first Soviet attempt to send a spacecraft to the Moon. Luna 2 (as it was renamed in 1963) deposited Soviet emblems on the lunar surface carried in 9 x 15-centimeter metallic spheres. Luna 2 was the second of a series of spacecraft launched in the direction of the Moon. It was the first of four E-1 missions to be launched.
