Tycho Brahe lost his nose in 1566 in a duel with Manderup Parsberg, a fellow Danish student at the University of Rostock and his third cousin. The importance of Tycho Brahe Associate professor Finn Olesen: How important is Tycho Brahe for science and for Denmark? In 1597, Emperor Rudolf II of Bohemia intervened and offered Brahe a pension of 3,000 ducats and an estate near Prague, where he planned to construct a new Uraniborg. Eventually, Brahe was removed from his beloved observatory. Tycho Brahe was born on December 14, 1546 and died on October 24, 1601. Tycho wore a prosthetic nose made of brass, and afterward he and Parsberg became good friends. Unfortunately, Tycho Brahe fell ill and died in 1601 before construction was complete. Tycho Brahe would have been 54 years old at the time of death or 468 years old today. As a scientist, I view Tycho Brahe as a key contributor to the boom in scientific knowledge and research during the Renaissance era, and an important figure in the breakthrough from the ideas of antique times to modern understanding of cosmology and nature.
