Kolumbo (or Kolumbos) volcano is an active submarine volcano located 8 km NE of Santorini Island in the Aegean Sea. Santorini is part of the Thira regional unit. Santorini Dive Center is the new trend on the island of Santorini. While investigating the seafloor around Santorini, the scientists explored the submarine crater of the Kolumbo volcano, just 7 kilometers from the island of Thira and part of the same volcanic complex, and discovered an extensive field of previously unknown hydrothermal vents. The new way to explore this unique volcanic island in the world of "underwater"! Santorini is largely volcanic in origin and consists of several islands arranged in a ring around a flooded caldera. The island was the site of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in recorded history : the Minoan eruption (sometimes called the Thera eruption), which occurred about 3,600 years ago at the height of the Minoan civilization. The picturesque archipelago of Santorini is the most prominent member of the South Aegean Volcanic Arc, formed as a result of subduction of the African under the Eurasian plate. The red volcanic rocks in Red beach, which reminds a lunar landscape, form a rare sight. The volcano forms an elliptical SW-NE elongated 3 km wide cone with a 500 m deep and 1.5 km wide crater, whose rim's highest parts rise to 18-15 m beneath sea level. The existence of the volcano is visible all over the island of Santorini, especially on the bizarre beaches that are covered, in their majority, in black sand and pebbles made of solidified lava. We have easy and quick access to all the great sites with our dive-boats from the Dive Station at Caldera Beach a small remote beach, below the cliffs of Akrotiri overlooking the Volcanoes.
