Tikkun olam — repairing the world — is a hallmark of Reform Judaism as we strive to bring peace, freedom and justice to all people. Reform Judaism (also known as Liberal Judaism or Progressive Judaism) is a major Jewish denomination that emphasizes the evolving nature of the faith, the superiority of its ethical aspects to the ceremonial ones, and belief in a continuous revelation, closely intertwined with human reason and intellect, and not centered on the theophany at Mount Sinai. We believe that all human beings are created in the image of God, and that we are God’s partners in improving the world. Reform Judaism in Israel During the past 100 years, the Reform Jewish Movement has made a dramatic ideological and physical return to Israel. Many Reform Jews live their daily lives in the same way that their non-Jewish friends do, without concern for kosher requirements. Instead of establishing a strict religious dogma, Reform Jewish rabbis advocated freedom of choice. Also known as Liberal or Progressive Judaism, it arose in the first decades of the 19th century, mainly in Germany, but it has flourished especially in the United States, where about 750,000 Jews are affiliated with it. The Reform movement was a bold historical response to the dramatic events of the 18 th and 19 th centuries in Europe. For example, when the movement began in the early 19th century, Reform synagogues started seating men and women together, pretty much dropped the dietary laws, and encouraged instrumental music at Shabbat services. In 1972, the Reform movement became the first Jewish movement to ordain women as rabbis. Reform Judaism affirms the central tenets of Judaism – God, Torah, and Israel – even as it acknowledges the diversity of Reform Jewish beliefs and practices. Historically, Christians and other faiths around the world had discriminated against Jewish people. The Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism was founded.
Other traditional Jewish practices also were changed. Tikkun olam — repairing the world — is a hallmark of Reform Judaism as we strive to bring peace, freedom and justice to all people. Reform Judaism emerged by the late 1700s in Europe. Every year, at least 800-900 people undergo Reform conversions to Judaism, according to the movement’s records, and some 9 percent of all Reform Jews were raised as non-Jews… Reform Judaism began in the early 19th century in Germany. Today it is larger in America than Orthodox and Conservative Judaism. Reform Jews tend to strip away what they consider to be unessential elements of Judaism in order to more closely observe the kernel of the tradition. Reform Judaism was the first of the modern interpretations of Judaism to emerge in response to the changed political and cultural conditions brought about by the Emancipation.. The Birth of Reform Judaism in Germany - Rabbi Abraham Geiger, a prominent German Jewish scholar, advocates for changes in Jewish practice that would make it easier for Jews to live Jewish lives in a modern society.
