Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, according to the well-known saying. On October 7, 1959, the Soviet probe Luna 3 took the first photographs of the lunar far side, eighteen of them resolvable, covering one-third of the surface invisible from the Earth.
The Ranger 7 lunar lander was the first true success in the United States' early quest to explore the moon and heralded a new era of exploration that saw dramatically more mission successes than failures. The Apollo astronauts brought back 382 kilograms (842 pounds) of rock and soil to Earth for study. The Ranger spacecraft gave scientists their first close look at the lunar surface. Yet it is only in the present day that our eyes need to make some effort to find beauty in so many faces. The Best Ranger Competition is a US Army event that is conducted by the Ranger Training Brigade. Following on the success of the Ranger 7 mission, which was the first United States spacecraft to photograph the moon up close, Ranger 8 took more than 7,000 high-resolution images of the moon before impacting the lunar surface on February 20, 1965. We can only see 59% of the moon’s surface from the Earth.
Ranger 7 was the first of many to follow. The first human landing on the Moon was on July 20, 1969. What made China’s mission especially remarkable was that it was the first soft-landing on the moon in 37 years, since the Russians landed their Luna 24 probe back in 1976. It is also about ¼ of the size of our planet.
It also has 1/6 of the Earth’s gravity that would make a person’s weight much less. The first six attempts failed, but beginning in July 1964, Rangers 7, 8, and 9 successfully completed their 65-hour journeys to the Moon by transmitting television pictures of the lunar surface during the final minutes until their impact there. Like its predecessor, Ranger 7 was principally built to take high-resolution photographs of the moon before impacting the lunar surface.

The Best Ranger Competition is held annually at Fort Benning, GA to determine the best two-man 'buddy' team over a grueling 60 hour event. This event is open to the public so join us this year! Ranger 7 was the first American spacecraft to image the moon's surface from close-up. Along with Rangers 8 and 9, its pictures helped the United States plan … Ranger 1, a test version of the spacecraft which would attempt an unmanned crash landing on the moon, was launched from the Atlantic Missile Range by an Atlas-Agena B booster. No one comes close to the level of quality, commitment and proven excellence inside and out of every Ranger boat.
During the Apollo missions of 1969–1972, 12 American astronauts walked on the Moon and used a Lunar Roving Vehicle to travel on the surface and extend their studies of soil mechanics, meteoroids, lunar ranging, magnetic fields, and solar wind. The images were analysed, and the first atlas of the far side of the Moon was published by the USSR Academy of Sciences on November 6, 1960. Nine Rangers were launched from 1961 through 1965. The moon is not a planet , it is a satellite of our planet.
