Given the problems we face here on Earth it's important to ask whether we should be better tasked with looking after the only planet we know (so far) that can harbour life. … 12 Falcon Heavy, presently the world's most powerful rocket capable of delivering about 17 tons to Mars surface, was successfully launched on 6 February 2018, demonstrating its capacity to deliver payloads within the framework of Mars One program. Credit: Kevin Gill, FlickrCC. These problems may not be as acute as those experienced on Mars, but again, we simply don’t know. Currently, Mars is a desolate desert, but the so-called “red planet” once contained liquid water and perhaps harbored life. These problems would persist for decades, or even centuries, in such a large-scale, slow project. Innovations in spacecraft, materials, and designs will be needed to accomplish such a mission, and those challenges are being met by new generations of engineers and scientists. The race to Mars

Mars is by far the most promising planet in the solar system on which we could support substantial human life. That hurdle being public support. Visiting and colonizing those worlds will require complex spacecraft not just to get people there, but to safeguard them once they arrive. There are people far more qualified than I to comment on the hard science of that question. Colonizing Mars might be our best hope if humans ruin or outgrow Earth. Not colonizing Mars when the ability to do so exists, because of microbes, is a far greater ethical failure. The hypothetical colonization of Mars has received interest from public space agencies and private corporations, and has received extensive treatment in science fiction writing, film, and art.. What I want to discuss is what seems to be the biggest hurdle for space programs of any sort. Kim Stanley Robinson’s ... Practicality has to enter into the “ethical” consideration at some point. 2 .

Mars One program has beenoperating since 2012 and, considering the present level of financial and public support, it is very likely to continue. Now, they want to walk on Mars.
