Using data from NASA's Kepler space telescope, two NASA interns and a team of amateur astronomers have found a new 'super Earth'.. NASA has just announced the discovery of a new super-Earth that could be both habitable and accessible. Potentially habitable 'super-Earth' discovered just 31 light-years away Follow-up research could reveal if the planet is rocky or has oceans. Earlier this week, NASA announced the discovery of a possible Earth-like planet, located just 31 light years away - a hop, skip and a jump in cosmic terms - that may be able to support life. Roughly twice the size of Earth… The super-Earth discovery was a fortuitous event that UC described as "one in a million." The two outer planets (Poltergeist and Phobetor) of the system have masses approximately four times Earth—too small to be gas giants. The first super-Earth around a main-sequence star was discovered by a team under Eugenio Rivera in 2005. .
Researchers have found a Super-Earth exoplanet they describe as "one in a million" in deep space. The GJ 357 system has three planets that we know of. The first super-Earths were discovered by Aleksander Wolszczan and Dale Frail around the pulsar PSR B1257+12 in 1992.
But the team of scientists that discovered … The planet's year lasts about 617 Earth days, even though its orbit falls somewhere between those of Earth and Venus around our sun. The astronomers used a gravitational microlensing technique to spot the planet. A super-Earth is a planet that has a mass between one and 10 times that of Earth.
