Israel’s violations of international law. Legal experts have suggested that the involvement of Israeli companies complicit with Israeli violations of international law in EU research projects calls into question whether the EU is itself violating its own commitments under international law.
Following hostilities between Israel and the Gaza Strip Dec. 2008 – Jan. 2009, Hamas has failed to conduct any domestic investigation into the serious allegations of violations of international humanitarian and human rights law committed by their forces during the conflict and Israel's investigations have been inadequate – failing to meet international standards. It aims to regulate wars in order to protect civilian populations. International humanitarian law, otherwise known as the law of war or the law of occupation, provides one layer of protection to the occupied Palestinian population. In 2004, the International Court of Justice ruled that states must not render aid or assistance to Israeli violations of international law. Enforcement of international law can be divided into what the violating state must do itself and what others, namely states, must do. In 1978, the Carter administration categorically concluded that Israel’s establishment of civilian settlements was inconsistent with international law. The call in the opening provision of the draft resolution to respect international human rights law and international humanitarian law, would appear to be all the more cynical in light of the flagrant violations by the Palestinian leadership and Hamas of international humanitarian and human rights law. Israel’s grave violations of international law include: The deliberate killing of civilians and targeting civilian infrastructure by the Israeli military, including during the summer 2014 attack on Gaza in which more than 2,300 Palestinians were killed. But, of course, in addition to international humanitarian law, international human rights law applies to the Israeli authorities, but also to the Palestinian authorities vis-a-vis their own populations and vis-a-vis Israelis. International humanitarian law – or the law of war – is the law applicable in armed conflicts. The children of Israel and Gaza are being targeted.
