This artist's concept shows a possible scenario for the internal structure of Titan, as suggested by data from NASA's Cassini spacecraft.
The surface of the Moon is the very top of the ice shell. If it turns out to be real, this salty subsurface sea could have more than all the water on Earth's surface. It would be considered a planet if it were orbiting the Sun instead of Jupiter. Like some other satellites of giant planets, Ganymede is globally covered with ice. Ganymede is the largest of moons in the Solar system.
06.28.12 . Ganymede is the largest moon, and one of the four Galilean moons of the planet Jupiter. Cassini Finds Likely Subsurface Ocean on Saturn Moon. Now, they have strong evidence for a deep saline ocean there. Radar sounding of the subsurface ocean on Ganymede: model description and numerical simulations. Hubble finds 'best evidence' for Ganymede subsurface ocean There is further, compelling evidence that Ganymede - the largest moon in the Solar System - has an ocean of water beneath its icy crust. Ganymede is larger than the planets Mercury and Pluto, and 2/3 the size of Mars. The rock shell is mostly surrounded by the ice. Image credit: A. Tavani › Full image and caption › Related animation. They also think that Ganymede has at least one (or more) oceans as well. The ice shell is very thick, measuring up to almost 800 km. Yet, for at least two decades, astronomers have suspected that the tiny moon Europa had subsurface oceans. That’s astonishing.

There is a hypothesis about the oceans beneath the ice on these satellites, which is supported by various observational data and simulation results. But understanding the ocean will be one of the primary objectives of the European Space Agency's billion-pound Juice robot when it arrives at Ganymede in 2030. This ocean is probably located about 150 km deep under Ganymede’s surface and may extend another 100 km deeper. If so, then it contains more water than all the oceans on Earth! Ganymede has an iron-rich, liquid core, followed by a layer of rock.
