Agung in 1963, Mexico's El Chichón in 1982, and the Philippines' Mt.

The way El Chichon affected the atmosphere was still seen about 22 months after the eruption, and maybe even still seen today. Prior to 1982, this relatively unknown volcano was heavily forested and of no greater height than adjacent nonvolcanic peaks. We study the response of the Southern Hemisphere circulation to the 1982 eruption of El Chichón and 1991 eruption of Pinatubo volcanoes in a suite of up‐to‐date coupled climate models.

The eruption literally darkened the skies, reducing the transmission of sunlight to Earth’s surface.

El Chichon, Mexico - 1982 . Three tropical volcanoes had climate-cooling eruptions in the second half of the twentieth century: Indonesia's Mt. Fun Facts; Bibliography; Fun/Interesting Facts-it means "the bump"-it has a pattern of eruptions-thought to be extinct-1982 eruption killed 2000 people-small but powerful-erupted constantly from March 28 to April 4 1982 -it is the most southern and eastern volcano in Mexico-1982 eruption also affected the Earth's climate for a couple years -almost 220,000 years old. El Chichón is a small trachyandesitic tuff cone and lava dome complex that occupies an isolated part of the Chiapas region in SE México far from other Holocene volcanoes. It is a strato volcano. Remembering El Chichon ... and cooled the northern hemisphere by 0.4°C (0.72°F). El Chichon was the first major eruption to have its atmospheric effects studied in detailed by modern instruments. El Chichon is the most southern and Eastern volcano in Mexico, and is about 3,721 ft. high. There are many domes in the volcano, but the largest dome, is within a 1.6 x 2 kilometer summit crater, created about 220,000 years ago.
