This world is a "super-Earth" at least 4.3 times as massive as Earth.
A planet with some similarities to Earth has been discovered "only" 11 light-years (that's a mere 64 trillion miles) from our solar system, astronomers announced in a study published Wednesday. Thanks to a wobble in its host star, researchers from UNSW have spotted a planet only 16 light-years away that could harbor life (shown in an artist's conception, above). under what conditions) life was able to survive, thrive and respond to environmental changes throughout Earth's geological history. Hot on the heels of Earth 2 - another planet discovered this summer which has the potential to harbour life - Wolf 1061c is the closest planet outside our solar system which could hold alien life. At least, that’s the claim of a team of astrophysicists from Villanova University. However, the scientists behind this most recent study believe there could be scenarios in which Proxima b could still support life. Depending on its atmosphere, Tau Ceti e could be a mildly hot planet suitable for simple life, or a scorching world like Venus. NASA astronomers discovered an Earth-like planet about 500 light years away that might be able to sustain life as we know it. The exoplanet Barnard’s Star b might be frigid, but that doesn’t mean it couldn’t support life. For example, if the planet happens to be tidally locked, meaning the same side faces its host star as it orbits, then surface water could allow for enough heat exchange between the hot and cold sides to support life throughout the whole planet. They make the case that Proxima-b, only 4.24 light-years away from our solar system and the closest known Earth-like rocky planet (though we know almost nothing about it), … It is therefore important to understand how (i.e. As always, the search for life in the cosmos begins with the study of Earth, since it is the only example we have of a habitable planet.
