The very opposite occurs when it becomes cooler and moves further away from the heat of the sun. When Pluto draws a little closer to the sun, these materials evaporate and subsequently form an atmosphere that surrounds the dwarf planet. The stellar occultation by Pluto on June 9, 1988, was observed with a high-speed CCD photometer attached to the 0.9-m telescope aboard NASA's Kuiper Airborne Observatory (KAO). Pluto’s surface is made up of a thin layer of nitrogen, carbon monoxide and methane. When Pluto draws a little closer to the sun, these materials evaporate and subsequently form an atmosphere that surrounds the dwarf planet. These ices vaporize and form a temporary atmosphere. The very opposite occurs when it becomes … The composition of Pluto's atmosphere is very similar to the Earth's which is also 80% Nitrogen. Pluto’s surface is made up of a thin layer of nitrogen, carbon monoxide and methane. In addition, radio waves sent from Earth to New Horizons bent as they passed through Pluto's atmosphere. When Pluto moves farther from the Sun, the atmosphere freezes and falls back onto Pluto… The complex molecules probably come from radiation, which forces new molecules to … This was the first observation of Pluto's atmosphere at altitudes higher than 170 miles above the planet's surface (270 kilometers). Between its small size and its distant location, the dwarf planet seems unlikely to have what it takes. The occultation lightcurve, which probed two regions on the sunrise limb separated by about 200 km, reveals a clear upper atmosphere that overlies an extinction layer with an abrupt upper boundary. Scientists working with NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft have observed Pluto’s atmosphere as far as 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers) above the surface. When Pluto is closer to the Sun in its orbit, the warmth from the Sun heats up the frozen ices of nitrogen, methane and carbon monoxide on Pluto's surface. This technique is a very powerful method for measuring even trace amounts of atmospheric gas. Pluto's atmosphere is roughly 90% Nitrogen, and 10% other complex molecules such as methane.

It is believed the dwarf planet Pluto is probably 60-70 percent rock and 30-40 percent ice. A tiny, cold rock, Pluto seems almost incapable of having an atmosphere.
